Story Problems

We have been working in math on story problems. To finish our unit the children made up the story problems in groups then I switched their papers and they had to solve the other groups problem. When they were finished I let them come up to the board and show everyone how they solved the problems.

100 day

We used our mats to count our snacks.






We had to count 100 objects and then were able to build whatever we wanted.

100 Day 2011

We were finally able to celebrate our 100th day of school today.






I usually like to do 100 activities all week so I started last week with "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". The children cut the caterpillar bodies out then we glued them down and numbered them by tens. This week we were able to finish coming up with 100 foods the caterpillar could eat, wow that was hard.


I have always used the 100 chart and some of the children get overwhelmed with all the numbers so I decided to go with this 100 chart and they loved it even the struggling children were able to count their objects using this. I got the idea from Erica Bohrer's unit, hers was colored but I made mine out of white circles and had the children color theirs.


I read the 100th Day Worries and the children had to write the problem and solution.



I had four containers containing different objects with different amounts, the children had to estimate how many objects they thought were in each container. We then counted them and wrote if they were more or less than 100.

Symmetry

We focused on symmetry, equal not equal and half and whole this week in math. The children worked in groups to make a graph of equal and not equal pictures. They also used gold fish to make a fair share using Deanna Jump's penguin activity. We had already done this before as a whole group but this time I made a booklet and the children had to get in pairs and use a dice to finish the book together. On Friday I read Curious George Flies a kite and the children made symmetrical kits. They really caught on to this concept and did an excellent job all week.

To make the kites I just gave each table scraps of construction paper left over and let them cut the shapes. I had showed them how to make them the same but cutting them together, they thought I had done magic and were so excited about that. When I see them get all excited about something so simple it truly makes me smile and love my job.

At the beginning of the year I get permission from the parents to use their children's pictures on the blog and some parents said no so that is why some faces are covered with their kites. They all love their picture taken and it's hard to explain why I don't take some of their pictures so I find it easier to just cover them up with their work, they love it because they can still see themselves when I show them the blog.

Skip Counting

We have counted by five's and ten's during calendar for months but I introduced counting by two's this week using mittens. On Friday we used teddy bears and the children worked in groups skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. We also made mittens and made a skip counting book.

Calendar

Before school had started I had found apples with numbers on them from another teachers blog that you put in a pocket chart and have the children count the numbers then they cover their eyes and I hide a worm behind one of the numbers. I then call on a student to come up point and tell me the number where they think the worm may be, oh my I had no idea how big a hit this would be for my kids. They started saying sorry every time someone couldn't find the worm and very excited and clapping when someone would find it, and they didn't realize they were recognizing the numbers which was great for me. When they started recognizing all the numbers I would mix the numbers up then to make it even harder I changed the numbers so they could count by fives and tens. Every season or theme I would also change the cards, I have used pumpkins, cornucopia, reindeer, and snowman. For the snowman I changed the worm to a sun, thought it was cuter that a worm for snowman. I do this everyday during our calendar time.
