We use Write from the Beginning in my district and we are working on observational writing. On Monday the children make their object and Tuesday we make a tree map for it then on Wednesday we make three sentences from the tree map and edit. Thursday we put it all together and publish our piece. I have a bulletin board outside the classroom where I staple their work on top of the week before, it is really neat to flip through their work to see how it has improved.

Dr. Seuss day 4-2011
Everyone wore slippers today to continue our Dr. Seuss unit.

We made a class alphabet book after I read Dr. Seuss ABC book. During math the children measured each other using the big feet then they made a page for another class book.

The children finished the day by writing what they had learned about Dr. Seuss this week.

Clouds
This week we studied the different types of clouds. I first made an anchor chart of the different clouds then the children made their own charts.
On Friday I read "It looked like Spilt Milk" then the children made a picture using a cotton ball with white paint. After the pictures dried they wrote what their picture was.

Valentines
We used this graphic organizer to write about Love is... in whole group then the children did their own organizer and writing. They did such a great job using this format that I will be using other organizers for our writing.
I just love the ideas they came up with
I had won a Valentine Unit from littlestlearners.blogspot, where this came from. If you have not already you should take a look at her blog, she has excellent resources.

In math we used conversation hearts to do addition, we used the cards as number generators.

Story Map
We worked all week on making a story map after each read aloud as a whole group. I wrote and the children told me who the characters where, the setting, problem and solution of each story. On Friday I read "The Rainbow Fish" and then they had to make their own story map. Of course not every student could write the sentences so I would talk with them to make sure the understood the concept and had them draw a detailed picture.

Write from the Beginning
We use the program Write from the beginning for our writing; for the first six weeks I model a narrative sentence with a detailed picture then the children write their sentences. I focus on having the children drawing a detailed picture of themselves and the setting, and attempt to write word wall words and beginning sounds to words.
I really like the program and the children are showing great improvement since the beginning of school. Here are a few pictures of thier writing in October.
