My school had a door decorating contest and first grade did "The shops at the North Pole" theme and each of us had a different store. Here is a picture of our door.
Here are a few other things we have been up to. The children wrote an alliteration sentence using gingerbread man. The also made reindeer and wrote three sentences describing it.
I send home a monthly family homework project and this month they were to make a wreath using thier hands. The children had to do kind things around thier home then write them on a their handprint then glue together to make a kindness wreath. Here are a few pictures.
Here are a few more pictures of other things the children have been doing.
In math last week the children learned about coins. They spent the week identifying coins and their value then on Friday I opened a Gingerbread man store. The children were so excited all week including a poor kid who got strep but didn't tell me he was sick because he wanted to stay for the store. I put a menu of how much the gingerbread man and the decorations cost and they had to come up with a plan as to what they would like to buy with their twenty five cents. They then had to bring me their money and add everything up and pay for it. They did a great job adding up the money and making some cute gingerbread man.
It has been way to long since I lasted posted and really need to catch up. Here are their pictures of the turkeys they made for their observational writing.
We use Write from the Beginning in my district and we are working on observational writing. On Monday the children make their object and Tuesday we make a tree map for it then on Wednesday we make three sentences from the tree map and edit. Thursday we put it all together and publish our piece. I have a bulletin board outside the classroom where I staple their work on top of the week before, it is really neat to flip through their work to see how it has improved.
